I've heard that I need a Manual J load calculation in order to choose the right heating and air conditioing equipment for my new house. Is this necessary? If so, is this something the hvac contractor can do, or should I be checking out some software?

Thank you,
John

most contractors should do the load calculations for you. key word being "should." some will just eye it up.

I always recommend checking load calculations. Use something like this Heat Load Calculator.
